Origination

The Bowen Technique was first developed by Thomas Ambrose Bowen who was born in 1916 in Geelong, Australia. He is believed to have initially treated greyhounds and horses and then went on to set up a remedial therapy practice utilising his own technique which is the basis for many thriving practices today.

What is the treatment?

The Bowen Technique is a remedial therapy. The body is constantly exposed to physical, mental and emotional stress so the amount our body is asked to do increases daily. We take it for granted that we can do whatever we want so that when something goes wrong, we demand a quick recovery.

The Bowen Technique promotes healing, pain relief and energy balancing so that when there is a breakdown of the system, the process of readjustment can be rapid. Bowen therapists will treat the complete body, horse or human, rather than a specific condition.

This involves moves on key muscular points which are designed to loosen muscle spasm and strain in addition to increasing the blood supply to affected parts. The process also stimulate lymphatic drainage, essential to clear away the by-products of the healing process.

The treatment is gentle and non-intrusive and consists of the therapist using fingers and thumbs over certain points around the body, making a rolling move over the soft tissue, muscle, tendon and ligament. In between each set of moves the therapist will leave the room in order to allow the body to relax and realign itself.

Most treatments can be performed through light clothing.

How many treatments?

This depends on the presenting symptoms but in most cases the average number of treatments is 3 or 4. Many people find it beneficial to have top up treatments thus preventing injury and maintaining a supple, healthy and relaxed body.
